Monday, September 13, 2010, Salt Lake City, Utah The Christensen Law Firm, PLLC, a Draper, Utah personal injury law firm, is pleased to announce that it is the Midwest regional sponsor of the 2010-11 American Lawyer Academy (ALA) Viral Video Scholarship Contest. (The Midwest Region includes Utah, Colorado, Nebraska and Kansas.) The scholarship program is dedicated to the thousands of accident victims who are injured or killed in motor vehicle collisions each year in the United States and hopes to save lives with a positive viral message. High school and college students nationwide are encouraged to submit their videos promoting safe driving.
“We see people every week whose lives have been changed because of injuries that they or a loved one has suffered in an automobile accident,” remarks attorney Ken Christensen. “Tragically, many times these injuries could have been prevented – or at least lessened – if only certain individuals had taken basic safety precautions while driving.”
In 2009, nearly 250 people were killed as a result of automobile accidents on Utah roadways, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Tragically, many of these accidents result from distracted driving. A recent University of Utah study shows that drivers who text while driving are eight times more likely to have an accident than the average driver – an increased risk that is double the risk of those who drive under the influence.
“One of the great things about the technology era is the ability to send a message to millions of people with the touch of a button,” says Christensen. “We truly believe that a creative video about driver safety can have a profound and long-lasting impact.”
The American Lawyer Academy Viral Video Scholarship Contest offers $25,000 in scholarships toward college tuition at a recognized academic institution.
